SEACOAST SERIES and TEAM EVENTS: If you have not already signed up for the Seacoast Series, it is not too late but the races are filling up fast. When you sign up, please make sure you put down CAA under team name so that we can continue our reign as the Seacoast Series Team Champs! Also, don’t forget to fill in CAA under TEAM NAME when registering for all other local races as well! If everyone uses CAA, then the race directors will be able to recognize each person as a member of the CAA team as opposed to a Coastal team…thank you.

Barefoot Running Study…a note from some graduate students from UNH looking for some “subjects”
Dear Coastal Athletic Association,
On behalf of my research partners, Dr. Timothy J. Quinn and Graduate Student, Corie Mae Callaluca, I would like to notify all of you of an upcoming research study we will be conducting on the UNH-Durham campus. The laboratory tests will be performed in the Robert Kertzer Exercise Physiology Laboratory (located in New Hampshire Hall), while the 5k time trial will be completed on the Paul Sweet Oval indoor track.
Looking for Male/Female competitive runners 18-45, minimum training of under 30 miles per week and a 5k time of under 22 minutes. In addition, we are looking for 20-30 subjects, half of which are experienced shod (shoes) runners, while the other half must be experienced barefoot runners.
Thank you for your time and hope to hear from you soon.
Sincerely,
Neil Baroody

Here are two more great race reports submitted by fellow members…feel free to send some along!
What:
Cox Rhode Race, Providence Marathon(submitted by Beth Lindquist)
Where: Providence, RI
When: May
Rating: Challenging, Friendly small city marathon
Summary: The marathon starts nice and early, at 7:30 am, right in downtown Providence. It is a small city marathon, with an easy to navigate starting area, small expo (actually got some great deals on running garb!!), and hotels are all very close to the start. This race was billed as fast and fairly flat, and it might be in future years, but they had to change the course this year due to work on the bike path. The first few miles are fun, running through the city with some challenging hills from miles 5-8. Heading out of the city onto a combination of bike paths and neighborhoods, it is a friendly marathon with enthusiastic spectators. It seems easy for spectators to be in multiple locations as I saw the same sign..a 20 mile warm-up with a 10k race..about 3 times. This year, we hit the hills again at mile 20. A hill that was approximately a mile and a half at mile 21 was brutal!! Definitely not a fast marathon, and very hilly with the hills in the last five miles badly placed. Not highly recommended, but if you would like a spring marathon in driving distance it is ok.
What: Miami Marathon & 1/2 Marathon (submitted by Sarah Avery-Leaf)
When: late January
Where: Miami FL
Rating: great winter race
I have done the half once and the full twice, this is a great race, very well supported and the opportunity of a weekend getaway to Miami after the holidays is perfect! The course is extremely flat, with the only inclines being several (pretty flat) bridges. The race starts before sunrise so the runner is treated to gorgeous water moonlight scenes with cruise ships that apparently are lit up especially for the race. Other perks are nice cool morning temps, empty streets with no traffic to fight and the thrill of dawn’s early light. Lots of downtown hotels allow runner to walk to and from the start, thus the hassle factor is minimal. The half goes through south beach and the full tacks on a tour of Coral Gables and Coconut Grove to the half marathon course. ING does a nice job and you get some fun schwag at the expo!
